Is Drinking Coffee Black Healthy?
Many people start their day right with a cup of coffee, but some opt to customize their beverage by adding milk and sugar – in doing so they are losing out on its natural benefits and taking in unnecessary calories that don’t provide health benefits. Furthermore, adding these extra elements increases caffeine levels further which could cause an increase in heart rate when consumed on an empty stomach.
Drinking black coffee without milk or sugar is an effective way to increase energy and alertness, particularly when taken first thing in the morning or prior to physical exercise. Just be mindful not to exceed the recommended daily amount of caffeine (400mg per day). In addition, black coffee contains various nutrients like potassium, magnesium, vitamins B2 and B5, making it a source of fuel that will keep you energized all day.
Some health experts argue that drinking several cups of black coffee a day may significantly enhance cognitive function in the short term, due to caffeine’s stimulating effect and components like chlorogenic acid found in coffee beans. Regular coffee consumption may help prevent dementia – one of the most prevalent neurodegenerative diseases – among older adults and may even lower Parkinson’s risk.
Coffee is an extremely effective antioxidant which works to detoxify the liver. Studies suggest this could lower the incidence of liver diseases such as cirrhosis, fatty liver disease and cancer; and drinking 24+ oz of black coffee each week significantly decreases chances of getting liver cancer – those drinking the most black coffee have an even better chance of avoiding colorectal cancer which is the second leading cause of mortality in the US.
Coffee contains caffeine, which acts as an all-natural metabolism booster and can stimulate the release of fatty acids used for fuel, leading to weight loss. However, consumption should be done with caution as too much caffeine may have detrimental side effects such as jitteriness and an increased heart rate for some individuals.
Black coffee is an incredibly low-cal beverage and when made with filtered coffee it can even more health benefits for you. Be careful with high calorie creamers like whipped cream or coconut milk that may increase its total caloric count. If you must use creamers, look for those that are low in calories and without added sugars. If caffeine sensitivity is an issue for you, decaffeinated coffee could provide all the same health benefits without any of its adverse side effects. Black coffee can provide more than energy – it can also enhance your mood and relieve stress. A rich source of soluble fiber, antioxidants and amino acids, it may help diabetics regulate blood sugar and reduce heart disease risk.
