Is Kapeng Barako Coffee Healthy?
Barako (sometimes referred to as liberica or kapeng barako) is the Philippine variety of coffee from the Coffea Liberica plant, famed for its great aroma and perfect pairing with native delicacies. This rare type of bean can be found throughout Lipa, Batangas and across the archipelago and has recently seen renewed worldwide interest due to exotic blends and special brews gaining in popularity; possibly helping restore Kapeng Barako industry glory days!
“Kapeng Barako” derives its name from the Filipino term for wild boar (‘barako”), as this iconic Filipino coffee has an intense and robust aroma resembling that of its namesake animal. Some believe the fruity qualities in Kapeng Barako may symbolize strength and power as represented by wild boar.
Barako coffee, grown in lowland areas of Batangas and Cavite provinces, is famous for its distinct tropical forest aroma that recalls where it originates. Hardy barako seeds offer unique flavor profile.
Decaffeinated coffee is also more disease resistant than arabica coffee and boasts larger seed sizes that permit greater yield per plant, making it the go-to option for farmers. Furthermore, its bold and intense flavor is highly prized in culinary applications.
Kapeng barako can add depth and richness to a variety of desserts and beverages, from drinks and affogatos to unique desserts and beverages. An affogato is a traditional Italian dessert consisting of pouring espresso over ice cream. Instead, try replacing this traditional method with brewed barako and mixing in Selecta’s Super Thick Vanilla Ice Cream to create an exotic bittersweet dessert with smooth texture and subtle bittersweet sweetness.
Kapeng barako’s rich, roasted flavor can add depth and intensity to beef dishes, especially those containing fattier cuts of meat. As a rub, combine 1 cup of brewed kapeng barako, 1/4 cup chili powder, teaspoon paprika, and coarse salt and mix. Use on dishes like kebabs, brisket or steak before grilling for optimal results.
Add Kapeng Barako to any cake recipe to enhance its intense, bittersweet flavor and pair well with chocolate or tiramisu (mascarpone or cream cheese). Its bold flavor can stand up against mascarpone or cream cheese used for tiramisu.
Kapeng barako stands out with its distinct taste and robust aroma, making it the ideal ingredient for baking breads and pastries. Its strong flavors complement dishes like potato pie and shepherd’s pie as well as sweet treats like coffee jelly and cupcakes, while providing extra energy throughout your day – but remember to limit caffeine intake!
