McDonald’s coffee is certified halal, as its preparation uses water that has not been treated with animal fats during production or boiling. Furthermore, no irradiation occurs to alter whether food falls under this definition of halal food.

Even though not all McDonald’s restaurants worldwide are certified halal, several in Muslim-majority countries serve halal items. All McDonald’s restaurants in Bahrain and Gozo Island are certified as halal. In Indonesia, customers can choose halal options like the McRice meal containing steamed rice with meat/beef/chicken and vegetables; Mashwi Foldover with garlic sauce and Bubur Ayam Spesial with tomato ketchup as options available to them.

U.S. locations were opened by this chain in Dearborn in 2000; recently however, they announced they will no longer sell halal products at their Michigan Avenue and Ford Road Detroit locations as well as on Schaefer Highway in Dearborn Heights – sparking heated debate among Muslim communities and members of the public who opposed their settlement agreement that gave $700,000 to Huda Clinic Detroit as well as various charities; some also received payments; a smaller sum was awarded to Majed Moughni who filed the lawsuit against them.
