McDonald’s, as one of the world’s leading fast-food chains, enjoys global coverage. Serving an assortment of foods and beverages at its more than 40,000 locations worldwide – including Muslim-majority nations where halal certified beef patties and other permissible items under Islamic law are served – the company also offers drinks such as smoothies, frappes and iced coffee that comply with Islamic law.
McDonald’s strawberry milkshake is composed of milk, sugar, whey powder, glucose syrup, stabilisers, strawberry juice concentrate, citric acid and preservatives; its main concern being its whey powder may have come from animals killed using animal rennet; this issue is common when discussing milkshakes containing whey; however most of McDonald’s whey comes from sheep and goat stomachs so most Muslims view the strawberry milkshake as being halal.
McDonald’s restaurants in Pakistan are all certified halal, serving an assortment of meat and dairy-based dishes such as burgers, chicken sandwiches, nuggets, fries and McCafe coffee. McDonald’s also provides desserts and ice creams that adhere to Islamic law.
McDonald’s locations in Bahrain are certified halal and offer menu items that adhere to Islamic dietary laws. All raw ingredients, cooking utensils and meals at these locations meet these standards; furthermore they utilize HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point) programs to ensure food is safe for Muslim consumers.
McDonald’s Bahrain menu offers several halal-certified items, such as its popular Filet-O-Fish made of white hoki or pollock fish fried in vats designated solely for use with non-halal meats, eliminating any risk of cross-contamination and making this an appealing option for Muslim consumers. In addition, other dishes including its Big Tasty beef or chicken burger served with grilled onions, cheese and an array of sauce options such as barbecue, sweet and sour or ketchup.
McDonald’s Apple Pie contains ingredients such as water, apple, flour, sugar and vegetable oils. Apple is considered a kosher ingredient in this pie’s recipe and there are no non-kosher components used; however, due to being cooked using sunflower-rapeseed oil (a non-kosher vegetable oil blend), making the item not considered halal-certified; however it is possible to find it at other McDonald’s locations such as UK where halal certified versions exist using different oils blends for cooking.
