Is Mushroom Coffee a Diuretic?
While mushroom coffee has gained widespread attention for its supposed health benefits, not all claims can be scientifically supported. It’s essential to realize that mushroom coffee should not be seen as a panacea and misuse could prove dangerous – particularly if there’s preexisting health problems present.
Some mushrooms found in mushroom coffee products, like chaga and cordyceps, have been shown to be anti-inflammatory and may assist with weight loss. Other mushrooms such as reishi and turkey tail may boost energy and have antioxidant properties; however, most studies conducted are limited and/or sponsored by the company that produces the product; this can lead to overstating or overselling benefits.
However, some mushrooms found in mushroom coffee may present adverse side effects for those with kidney or digestive conditions. Chaga mushroom contains high concentrations of compounds known as oxalates that increase your risk for kidney stones. Furthermore, coffee and caffeine inhibit your body’s ability to assimilate these nutrients from these mushrooms.
Concerns remain that adaptogenic mushrooms found in mushroom coffee could interact with medications you’re taking, including blood thinners and cause serious or life-threatening reactions in those already taking medication. Potential interactions include lower blood sugar and blood pressure levels, faster metabolism of certain medications and blocking of some nutrients being absorbed by your body. Furthermore, certain herbs used as an ingredient could potentially lower blood pressure further by acting upon it directly, increasing metabolism or blocking absorption altogether.
Mushroom coffee can be prepared by mixing dried or powdered mushrooms with freshly-brewed black or green tea, although you can also purchase pre-mixed blends like Naturealm’s Sacred 7 Mushroom Extract Blend and Sixways’ Hormone Balance blend.
These mushroom brews typically contain half the caffeine found in regular coffee, meaning you are less likely to experience jittery feelings or a caffeine crash.
Mushroom coffee contains specific medicinal mushrooms linked to specific health benefits, including cancer prevention. Studies using Chaga, Reishi and Cordyceps mushrooms as test subjects have demonstrated they inhibit cancer cell growth in test tubes; some extracts have even proven antiulcer and antiallergenic. Animal studies indicate Reishi may even suppress mast cells responsible for allergic reactions when eaten as food.
The optimal way to enjoy mushroom coffee is with other sources of mushrooms in your diet, such as whole or cooked mushrooms and their juices or tinctures. Working with a holistic practitioner who can recommend safe mushroom products and provide guidance for taking full advantage of this trending beverage is also highly recommended. If you choose to give mushroom coffee a try, be sure to carefully follow all instructions provided as well as discuss any concerns with healthcare provider prior to beginning its consumption.
