Is Mushroom Coffee Really Good For You?
Social media posts of people sipping mushroom coffee-like drinks featuring medicinal mushroom extracts is becoming more and more common, yet adding mushrooms to one’s daily diet for health reasons is nothing new. Mushrooms contain antioxidants which fight free radicals and reduce oxidative stress – potentially helping prevent or delay serious diseases such as cancer, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.
Mushroom blends can also help strengthen immune function and energize energy levels, providing essential vitamins and minerals like Vitamin D (which assists with calcium regulation), potassium, selenium and phosphorus. Mushrooms also contain B Vitamin complexes including Vitamin B2, B3 and B5, which promote healthy cell metabolism as well as increase focus and mental energy. They’re also packed with protein and fiber content!
Mushrooms contain adaptogens which have the power to help reduce stress. Adaptogens work by balancing cortisol levels produced in response to stress and improving sleep quality – this may explain why some people experience better slumber after drinking mushroom coffee.
However, no clinical studies exist that support the purported health benefits of mushroom coffee. Furthermore, its effect is unknown due to drying, extracting, and brewing procedures; nor can anyone tell whether taking supplements compared with whole mushrooms will produce similar benefits.
Though mushroom coffee may not pose any significant health risks, too much could cause side effects like an upset stomach and rapid heart rate if caffeine sensitivity is an issue. Also avoid mushroom coffee if you have any allergy to mushrooms, kidney or digestive issues and consult your physician prior to beginning any supplement regimens to ensure it’s suitable.
Oxalates found in some mushrooms can increase kidney stone risk in individuals who already have preexisting conditions, such as preexisting kidney disease or difficulty digesting grains. Chaga mushrooms in particular should be avoided due to high concentrations of oxalates that could potentially form stones in kidneys with preexisting conditions.
If you suffer from these sensitivities, it may be wise to stick with regular coffee for optimal health benefits. Mushrooms provide similar health advantages: fiber, vitamin D and other essential vitamins can all be found within them.
