Jarrod Wyatt will stand trial in Del Norte County for this violent act against one of his MMA training partners after both men consumed tea containing toxic mushrooms.
An Australian woman is facing three murder charges and five attempted murder charges after serving beef Wellington laced with death cap mushrooms at a family lunch.
How It Happened
Jarrod Wyatt will face trial in California’s Del Norte County Superior Court today for killing 21-year-old Michael Powell after they consumed mushroom tea together, according to police reports. Powell suffered internal organ trauma prior to being cut out alive, having his tongue and skin cut from his face as well. Wyatt faces murder and aggravated mayhem charges related to this March 21 killing; in order for him to avoid jail he must prove beyond a reasonable doubt that it was self-defense that caused Powell’s death.
Jarrod Wyatt
Murder occurred in March 2010 for young MMA fighter Wyatt who was just starting out. After winning his debut fight and with hopes of turning pro soon afterward. A talented grappler and hard worker. It was heartbreaking when Wyatt was murdered so brutally.
Police discovered that Wyatt and Powell had consumed mushrooms prior to their attack and became convinced they were caught up in an epic struggle between God and Satan, with Powell as their enemy. Wyatt entered dual pleas of not guilty by reason of insanity causing psychiatric exams; eventually a judge determined he was competent enough for trial in May.
Sheriff’s deputies and Yurok tribal police arrived at Wyatt’s Requa home to find him standing naked over Powell, covered with blood, telling officers “I killed him,” according to court documents. Powell was found on a couch, his chest open with parts removed such as his heart, tongue, skin of face removed; further investigation led them to discover his heart in an oven at the residence charred beyond recognition – possibly suggesting this may have been where Wyatt had placed it after cutting open Powell.
Justin Davis, another friend who consumed Wyatt’s mushroom tea concoction at his Klamath home, reported to police that upon drinking it he became upset and aggressive, turning into an aggressive monster. Wyatt then started fighting Powell with a rear chokehold he learned during MMA training as the two began fighting each other.
Wyatt ended the commotion when he tore out Powell’s heart, cut away his tongue and skin before cooking and eating his organ before pouring a cupful of the broth over his victim’s head before fleeing the scene.
James Fallman, Wyatt’s lawyer, tried to argue that his client was suffering a psychotic episode and therefore wasn’t responsible for the crime; however, premeditated first-degree murder charges hinge on proof that someone acted with malice towards Powell, something Fallman failed to convince the jury of. Wyatt was ultimately sentenced to 50 years to life imprisonment.

Police believe Jarrod Wyatt killed and disfigured his sparring partner after they consumed mushroom tea at some point during the early hours of March 21, 2010; both were under the influence and believed the world was coming to an end and Powell was the devil. Following pleas of not guilty by reason of insanity from Wyatt, multiple psychiatric examinations were performed before in May a Del Norte County judge determined he was competent for trial.
At Wyatt’s trial, investigators called several witnesses to testify as witnesses regarding what transpired at the crime scene and following his arrest. A sheriff’s deputy from the scene of the crime and a detective were both present when interviewed Wyatt after his arrest; additionally Bailey (Wyatt’s ex-girlfriend) described drinking tea with Powell and another friend before beginning to hallucinate shortly thereafter.
Bailey
As one of the show’s original surgical interns, Bailey is an uncompromising surgeon renowned for her fierce intelligence and firm will. Although often at odds with Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo), Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh), and Izzie Stevens (Katherine Heigl), Bailey also shows compassion towards other staff at the hospital as she serves as a dedicated mentor, teaching interns how to treat patients with respect while standing up for themselves.
Bailey is known for taking an aggressive yet thoughtful approach to medicine, yet remains soft-spoken and thoughtful when it comes to her personal life. She was married for 10 years to Tucker Jones (Cress Williams) until they parted ways and she has fostered two children since entering perimenopause – which may account for why she has spent more time at home rather than working.
Grey Sloan Memorial continues to see her as a powerful medical force, spearheading the launch of a genome mapping program and working closely with Arizona Robbins on pediatric cases; as well as considering becoming a pediatric surgeon herself; however, Chief of Surgery Richard Webber strongly discourages any thoughts of doing so; even giving an unsatisfactory recommendation letter and buying an surgical robot in an effort to draw her back towards general surgery.
At first, Bailey remains firm in her decision. But as soon as she begins feeling discontent in her current job, she decides to accept Webber’s disapproval and take up the fellowship despite Webber’s objections. Izzie will manage the clinic so she can focus on her own career while supporting Torres at once.
From its early seasons of Grey’s Anatomy, Bailey serves as an ally and guide for Izzie as she battles a form of cancer with an extremely low survival rate. Furthermore, Bailey shows her dedication as a foster mother by taking in Joey Phillips from prison; later being murdered by an assailant after release. Bailey has had an immense influence over all her colleagues, providing strength in times of need.
