Mushroom Coffee – Health Benefits, Taste and More
We examine the health benefits, taste, and other attributes of this unique alternative to coffee for our morning cup of joe.
Mushroom coffee combines the delicious flavor and energy of regular coffee with the immune-enhancing powers of mushrooms, an adaptogen known for helping relieve stress and increase focus. A popular wellness beverage, it has gained notoriety as an appealing and healthier alternative due to containing less caffeine.
Manufacturers commonly incorporate medicinal mushrooms like reishi, lion’s mane, chaga and turkey tail into mushroom coffee products to provide mental and physical benefits. These mushrooms contain rich sources of healthy components that support natural body functions including those related to immunity and brain functioning.
Studies suggest that these mushrooms may also help lower cortisol, the stress hormone. More research needs to be conducted on this effect to confirm these claims.
Mushrooms come in capsule, tea and coffee form and can be taken either as supplements or added into dishes such as soups and sauces. Reishi mushrooms in particular make taking them easy by being sold as powder that can easily be mixed into food and drinks.
Reishi is an effective anti-oxidant and many people enjoy its flavor in mushroom coffee, but it is important to be aware that such products contain more oxalates than normal coffee, potentially leading to kidney problems over time. Furthermore, taking Reishi along with blood thinners or diabetes medications is not advised as this could exacerbate kidney issues further.
