Adaptogens
Adaptogens are an emerging wellness trend. Long used by Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine for centuries, adaptogens have recently come back into the limelight as an effective solution to modern-day stresses like demanding jobs, annoying commutes or recovery from exercise. Indeed, adaptogenic herbs work holistically with your nervous, endocrine, immune and cardiovascular systems to bring balance back into the body when feeling overwhelmed.
In 1947, a Soviet pharmacologist coined the term “adaptogen,” which describes herbs said to possess three characteristics. They’re nontoxic when taken at normal doses; support the body’s natural resilience against stress; and have a balancing effect on organs and hormones – helping you feel more resilient as a result. You can find adaptogens in many supplements ranging from capsules, teas and tinctures; they can even be added directly into food such as soups, smoothies or coffee mix!
Ashwagandha, an evergreen shrub found throughout India and parts of Africa, can provide soothing effects without creating stimulant effects. Furthermore, its use may help regulate cortisol levels that may become elevated due to chronic stress levels.
Rhodiola rosea is another adaptogen which has been found to increase energy, decrease inflammation and combat depression through various neurological effects. Furthermore, it increases resistance to stress by acting like a neurotransmitter inhibiting cortisol’s actions – thus protecting us from its devastating impact.
Rhodiola and ashwagandha can both be found in various supplements, such as tinctures, capsules and teas. You can add both of them to food by simmering 3-6 teaspoons of the dried herb in 1 cup of hot water for 5 minutes to make a rhodiola root tea and drinking three times daily – see recipe here.
Focus
Focus is the ability to concentrate your attention on one object or area, from studying to working on projects at work. A hard time focusing can be caused by many things including stress, sleep deprivation and lack of exercise; however there are ways you can increase focus, such as taking supplements that promote concentration like Ashwagandha which has been shown to help calm and focus people as well as reduce anxiety and depression. Another solution could be meditation apps which help focus on one thing.
Brain Health
Shawn Ryan of The Shawn Ryan Show and former Marine Raider Nick Kefalides discuss an internal battle. Additionally, they recount a journey they undertook together on sacred plant ibogaine that helped heal both themselves and one another. Ambio joined with this show to make this story and message accessible while simultaneously raising funds and awareness for VETS (which provided their journey) and its efforts in healing US Special Operations Veterans.
Mental Health
Mental health awareness is crucial, so if you or a loved one is experiencing any of the following symptoms, seek professional medical help immediately:
Treatment plans depend on the nature and severity of your mental illness; most often they consist of psychosocial therapies and prescription psychiatric medication. In severe cases, hospitalization may be necessary. Alongside primary care physicians, psychiatrists (medical doctors who specialize in mental disorders and can prescribe medication), psychologists, social workers, counselors and religious leaders may all provide treatment services or refer you for services.
