Should You Drink Mushroom Coffee Hot Or Cold?
Mushroom coffee is typically prepared using blends of powdered medicinal mushrooms blended with coffee and other ingredients, and can be prepared either like traditional coffee or more like tea for use in hot water, smoothies, soups and other drinks. K-cups and instant formats may also be available. Since mushroom coffee usually contains less caffeine than its standard counterpart, it may be suitable for people sensitive to its stimulant effects or looking to reduce their daily caffeine consumption; some mushroom varieties contain only 50 milligrams while others may have as much as 500 milligrams listed on their labels.
Medicinal mushrooms are believed to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, as well as possibly helping balance cortisol levels (a stress hormone). Unfortunately, the evidence supporting these claims remains limited and inconclusive. Chaga mushrooms are commonly used in brewed products and thought to reduce inflammation, boost the immune system and aid digestion; other popular varieties include lion’s mane, turkey tail and cordyceps.
Some brands of mushroom coffee claim their products have greater energy-boosting effects than regular java, or make health claims such as strengthening immunity, combatting disease and relieving stress. Unfortunately, research into mushroom coffee benefits remains limited and most have yet to be confirmed in large clinical trials.
If you’re curious about trying mushroom coffee, speak to your physician first so they can give their blessing and explain any potential side effects. Since dietary supplements aren’t regulated by the FDA like prescription or over-the-counter drugs are, potential interactions between medicinal mushrooms and medications could occur which cause side effects and interact negatively.
Mushrooms may be difficult on those with existing digestive conditions or kidney issues. Some mushroom extracts used in mushroom-infused beverages contain high concentrations of oxalates which may increase kidney stone formation risk and may needlessly upset your system. It would be best to stick with traditional coffee instead or other methods for getting your fungi fix, like eating real mushrooms directly.
While most experts consider mushroom coffee to be safe, it’s wise to monitor how your body responds when taking it for the first time. If any adverse reactions arise, stop drinking it immediately and contact a healthcare provider or dietitian for guidance.
