Ted Lasso – Episode 3 – Sunflowers
Warning: Please be aware that this episode contains explicit language and references to sexual material.
Ted Lasso has always felt homesick, and in this episode assistant coach Beard offers to help him cope by giving him some hallucinogenic drugs in his tea. What results from this plan is an amusing drug-trip/dream sequence that leads him down an inspiring road towards formulating an effective football strategy for Richmond.
What is it?
Ted Lasso may not be known for its sophistication, but it certainly knows how to have fun. That is why it should come as no surprise when the American football series took a trip to Amsterdam during one of its episodes called “Sunflowers.” On this trip they took advantage of taking psychedelic drugs in Holland’s capital city!
Though not explicitly revealed in the episode, several clues in it point towards magic mushrooms being used by the team. This shouldn’t come as a shock since both co-creator Jason Sudeikis and star Brendan Hunt have spoken publicly about their own experiences tripping on mushrooms before.
Beard started off their Amsterdam adventure by providing them with lemon tek, a Dutch-style tea that induces hallucinations when consumed. Unlike cannabis, which typically takes 30-60 minutes to reach full potency and lasts four hours before reaching maximum levels, lemon tek offers an easier and safer option to test out this drug without fearing too strong effects or adverse side effects.
After arriving in Amsterdam, the team heads straight for a jazz club where Leslie Higgins provides breathtaking music. Next stop? Van Gogh Museum to view its famed painting by this same name – where Nate confesses his kiss on Keeley to Roy who then forgives him without incident and assures everyone it wasn’t any big deal.
The next day, the team sets off exploring their city. Soon they discover that streets are lined with sunflowers leading them directly to a local bakery where the staff weren’t aware of their joke but offered edible sunflowers as snacks – at this point things really began getting wild as players were whisked into an incredible journey filled with neon shapes and deep-voiced narration.
Ted Lasso writers delivered another hilarious episode with this unique episode! We can’t wait to see what their writers come up with next season when it returns in September!
How does it work?
Taken orally, Ted Lazso mushroom tea can cause psychedelic effects within 30-60 minutes and typically last four hours before gradually dissipating over time depending on an individual’s tolerance levels and other factors. When taking this medication it is vital that all instructions are strictly adhered to; taking too much can have serious or even life-threatening repercussions.
Though the show has always taken a playful approach to soccer, its writers are becoming more and more unafraid to explore some of its darker corners. This was evident in its latest episode that focused on an Amsterdam night out involving drugs such as mushrooms. Although no explicit details are disclosed regarding them being consumed here.
Lemon tek, commonly referred to as magic mushrooms or shrooms in Amsterdam, is an increasingly popular recreational drug sold on the street. Lemon tek can be mixed with various substances to provide different effects such as pain relief or sexual enhancement, making it less potent than its cannabis equivalent but still having similar results on users; unlike cannabis however, lemon tek may take longer before experiencing its desired results and multiple doses may be required for optimum effects.
This episode was an excellent display of how well this show balances comedy with serious subject matter. Ted Lasso is very homesick for America, so this episode offered him a chance to experience some favorite parts of home with his team in Amsterdam. Lemon tek was consumed and they also went out and saw an Bowie tribute band performance.
As a result, team morale was restored, leading them to defeat Amsterdam City FC in their next match. Additionally, this episode showcases Apple TV+’s global reach – no surprise considering their longstanding association with English football; yet impressive that such an iconic show could become so successful across borders.
Is it safe?
Ted Lasso is a sports-driven comedy with a humorous edge and is not afraid to take risks in pursuit of its humor, as seen in one episode from season 3 called “Sunflowers,” when Coach Beard gets high off lemon tek and Ted experiences a trippy trip.
After their devastating loss against AFC Ajax at Johan Cruyff Arena, Ted and his team go out exploring Amsterdam together. Ted suggests visiting the Van Gogh Museum, cycling through windmills and dining at an American-sounding burger joint named for an iconic figure like Michael Jordan or Eminem. Most locations featured are real, except for Rebecca staying on a houseboat and the restaurant Ted visited which were built for this episode – houseboat Rebecca resided on and this particular American eatery being constructed just for this episode!
Lemon tek should not be seen as an instant alternative to cannabis; rather, its effects usually take between 30-60 minutes to take full effect and last four hours before gradually dissipating. Furthermore, this tea should never be used without first consulting with a medical provider first.

Is it addictive?
As Ted Lasso continues into its third season, it has quickly become must-see TV. Starring Jason Sudeikis and featuring one of the most beloved sports comedies worldwide. Though there have been its share of issues along with high writing and acting quality. One thing missing was any real sense of psychedelics’ effects in altering perceptions; that changed with episode 17’s trip/dream sequence where Ted takes some drugs in Amsterdam.
Though we weren’t told what exactly Beard gave him, it’s safe to assume the mushroom tea he provided contained some type of hallucinogen; though its effects might not have been as profound, their impact was still noticeable.
This was an unexpected twist for the series, as it hadn’t previously touched on mental health. Yet it made complete sense in context of Ted’s struggle as a football coach and dealing with stress over failure to make his team competitive – something Ted was experiencing with great intensity – taking some medicine to ease his mind was therefore wise move.
The production design and visual effects teams of this show truly deserve credit for producing an incredible psychedelic dream sequence that showed Ted how to lead Richmond to victory. Neon shapes, dark expanses, and deep voiced narration all served to bring Ted closer to finding out the keys to winning Richmond games.
No doubt about it: Ted longs to return home. And while psychedelics don’t provide the same relief that returning would would, they do give him an idea of what life may be like back home again.
Ted took time off during training with his team in Amsterdam to visit Prik jazz club and take in some of its sights. This location served as filming location for the series and offers live jazz performances every night of the week; additionally, there’s the Homomonument memorial that pays homage to LGBTQ community members persecuted by their governments.
